Regatta Hero Features

All features explained quickly

Regatta Hero
for the Regatta Participant

The regatta participants have a smartphone on board that sends GPS coordinates and communicates all information. The app's data consumption is approximately equivalent to streaming music on Spotify or 20% of what Google Maps consumes in navigation mode per minute.

For dinghies, catamarans, etc., the smartphone with the activated app is placed in the zippered pocket of the life jacket (possibly packed in a waterproof case). The app then communicates acoustically.

On a larger boat, you can carry the smartphone on your upper body or upper arm. Further instructions are available here.

The app communicates acoustically and also provides information on the display (start and other regatta flags, regatta timer, and general announcements).

Regatta Hero
for the Regatta Organizer

For conducting the regatta, an organizer is needed, who starts the regatta using the app. It is possible for the organizer to participate in the regatta themselves.

The app independently conducts the entire start with a 5-minute starting signal, flagging, and start countdown. Early start, course shortening, and finish are flagged and displayed on all boats.

With the help of the app, messages can be sent to all participants before the regatta.

See an overview in the following video or also in this video.

Regattas and courses are also created via the app. And the buoy markers for each course are also defined there.

Regatta Tracking via Webpage

The entire progress of the regatta can be tracked in real-time (or later as a replay) via a web browser. On the page, you can see all information about the boats along with the ranking of the boats at the finish line. See the following YouTube video.

When sailing with Yardstick, the calculated time is automatically used.

The webpage can run in the club house on a large screen. Likewise, the race can be followed live or watched later as a replay from anywhere via smartphone, tablet, or PC.

Course Setup

The various regatta courses can be configured via a web interface. In addition to classic buoys, GPS-controlled, smart buoys can also be integrated.

All imaginable regatta courses are possible. Setting up kangaroo regattas or regattas sailed on time is also possible.

Regatta Hero optionally allows defining regattas that use acoustic signals instead of buoys. When a sailor reaches a mark, they receive the information that they have reached the mark and may take the course to the next mark.

Background Server Software

To make all components work together, background server software is required. This is provided once and runs without further intervention.

The server software is based on the well-known and globally standardized communication standard REST, which enables real-time communication of data over the Internet and mobile networks.

The server is hosted, for example, by the German cloud provider 'Hetzner'. The hosting fee currently costs about 5 euros per month, which is paid directly to the cloud provider.
